Starting any type of business is never easy. In addition to finding a product that will sell, the financial risks can be huge. But for two friends, who are still teenagers, the risk is beginning to pay off. Tom Toner and Tom Edwards, of Trowbridge, UK, have been friends for a long time. While working part-time jobs, they decided to go into business together selling original T-Shirts. Selling the t-shirts online has paid off and the company is getting a lot of publicity.Their company, HighGrade Clothing, caters to those in the 14-34 year old range, but anyone can wear the Tees. The designs come from things they see in the street, music influences, and the skateboarding culture. It is Toner who designs the shirts and Edwards who is on the business end.
“I learned how to design club flyers and I managed to make a bit of money from doing that so I thought I might as well try something else. I want to go to uni to study graphics so I thought this would help too. It's great because it means I've got a place to showcase my own art and it's something that's more accessible for people like us,” said Toner of his future plans.
Putting their money together to buy materials, web site, and other marketing costs was risky. At times, the families of the friends didn’t think they would be able to make much money. “My mum is pretty impressed actually - I've always done stuff on my own but I don't think she expected that I would pull it off,” said Toner.
The friends plan on running their T-Shirts in limited design so that they will be able to produce new shirts to keep people interested. They will continue selling their shirts at fairs, festivals, and on their web site.
