Photographing T-shirts

Monday 19th of February 2007 05:37:15 PM

Photographing T-shirtsPhotographer and painter Judy Seigel, has been taking pictures of political T-Shirts and other kinds of shirts for many years now. It all started when she spotted a political t-shirt on the subway in New York, USA in the 1970’s. Even though she thought the t-shirts should be photographed, she didn’t decide to photograph them until years later. Now Seigel has hundreds of photographs of t-shirts and recently released a book of these photographs titled, “[Read My T-shirt] for President . . . a True History of the Political Front and Back.”

Originally, a book that chronicled different types of t-shirts, Seigel found that she had taken pictures of mostly political T-Shirts. “The political T-shirts would overpower the other types of T-shirts,” Seigel said. She didn’t want the message of the political t-shirts to be overshadowed by humorous or offensive slogans and sayings, so she didn’t include other types of t-shirts.

After looking for a publisher for her book, Seigel ended up publishing it herself. She took photographs from the last twenty-five years, mostly pictures taken in the neighbourhood where she lives in New York City. While Seigel almost had a book deal in 2004, the publisher told her that the t-shirt fad would end soon and her book was not of interest.

But the t-shirt fad has not ended, it fact it has become more popular over the years. Political humour, satire, raunchy jokes, saying, and slogans are used to create t-shirts for all ages. Seigel has managed to chronicle years of political T-Shirts and put them into a book that will hopefully tell the evolution of the political t-shirt and why it is so popular today.
