Moms Start T-shirt Business

Tuesday 13th of February 2007 06:43:50 PM

Moms Start T-shirt BusinessAfter creating T-Shirts decorated with rhinestones that said ‘Moms Rock’ at a craft night, two stay-at-home moms, Melissa Underwood, and Patricia Moffitt, decided to go into business custom designing t-shirts. They have been very successful so far creating individual T-Shirts from orders they receive from their web site.

2 Funky Mums has a web site that features T-Shirts designed by the women that other women find attractive and fun. The women also feature custom designed shirts for women’s sports teams, clubs, and for women who want a unique t-shirt. Underwood said about her customers, “Moms want shirts to show their school spirit, but they're tired of silk-screen designs.”

The company has been very successful so far and is continuing to grow. This leaves the two women with less time to spend with their children, but they are adjusting. Underwood said of being a parent and a businesswoman, “There are times when I would have been reading a book to my kids that I'm now checking e-mail. I feel like I have a little less time for my kids, but it's also good for them to see me do work.”

Moffitt feels the same way. “I'm showing my daughter that if you have an idea and a vision, you can do it.”

Finding time to raise a family while running a t-shirt business is not easy, but the two women are able to enjoy both. T-Shirts have been ordered by large groups such as Mom Camp, which is a weekend retreat for moms. The organisation hosts hundreds of women each year. But smaller orders are also popular.

Striking a balance between working and being a parent seems to the answer for these moms. “The dishes might wait until morning. My kids might go to school with unmatched outfits. You've got to choose your battles,” said Underwood.
