Giving Backpacks for Charity

Tuesday 13th of February 2007 06:40:41 PM

Giving Backpacks for CharityEach year, the Junior League of Sioux City, Iowa, USA, donates ‘emergency’ backpacks filled with T-Shirts, fleece blankets, crayons, pencils, colouring books, shampoo, combs, brushes, toothpaste, toothbrushes, snacks, and other items for children in the area who are victims of child abuse. The children who live at the Mercy Child Advocacy Center in Sioux City have been removed from abusive homes and are rebuilding their lives.

Backpacks are available in different colours and the children will be able to choose their own when they are delivered to the centre. Filled with items that children will want to play with, wear, and eat help the children feel special and appreciated. Fleece blankets are handmade by volunteers from the Junior League. Teaching other children in the community is also a goal of this project. Children from the community are involved in filling the backpacks with T-Shirts and other items.

Teaching others how to give their time to charitable organisations will help continue the legacy of giving back those in the community who need help. The children who live at the Mercy Child Advocacy Center were taken out of homes that were not suitable for them to be living in.

The Mercy Child Advocacy Center was established in 1989. It is the first centre of its kind in the state of Iowa and has helped over 10,000 children. Over 90 backpacks will be given to children at the centre.

In the years since the Junior League started delivering backpacks, over 600 has been created and handed out to the children at the centre.
