Making Music with Just a Shirt

Friday 09th of February 2007 05:47:09 PM

Making Music with Just a ShirtScientists in Australia have designed T-Shirts that play music when the person wearing the shirt plays the air guitar. The T-Shirts can be worn by those who are right handed or left handed and no prior musical ability is required. As long as people can make the guitar playing motions, they will be able to sound as if they are really playing the instrument.

The T-Shirts are equipped with sensors that pick up body movements. Sounds are made when people move their bodies pretending to play the guitar. The concept behind this new musical instrument was designed by a team of scientists from the Belmont Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Australia.

Dr. Richard Helmer, one of the scientists involved in the project said, “It's an easy-to-use, virtual instrument that allows real-time music-making, even by players without significant musical or computing skills. It allows you to jump around and the sound generated is just like an original mp3.”

Similar T-Shirts are being developed that will allow people to play other instruments including the tambourine.

Even though there are questions concerning the wear and care of these T-Shirts , they are easy to slip on and off and will allow anyone who can move around the chance to sound like their favourite rock star.

There are a few places where the shirts are not welcome, however. Air guitar championships, for example, will not let anyone wearing the shirt become a contestant because it is an unfair advantage.

But for those who just want to know what it feels like to make great music and jump around a lot while doing it will love these shirts.
