Student Supports Troops in Iraq by Selling T-shirts

Thursday 08th of February 2007 08:54:11 PM

Student Supports Troops in Iraq by Selling T-shirtsKaitlyn Essman, a student at Rector Elementary School in Rector, Arkansas, USA, decided she would sell printed T-Shirts with the slogan “I support the 875th” for her business project at school. As part of the schools gifted students program, Essman and others were challenged to create a business and marketing plan as part of the economics fair the school holds annually.

Because of relatives including her great-uncle David Clayton and his son, Aaron along with other people she knows who have relatives that are serving in Iraq, she decided to sell t-shirts and donate all the profits to Operation Dadbags, a local charitable organisation that sends care packages to those serving in Iraq other areas. Care packages containing toiletries, magazines, snacks, and other items cost about $25.00 to fill and send. Operation Dadbags sent over fifty packages last month to soldiers.

On the second Monday evening of each month, volunteers work to fill boxes with items that have been purchased and ship them out to the troops. The organisation is always looking for monetary donations or item donations. Volunteers are needed also.

At the fair, Essman featured red T-Shirts and encouraged everyone who attended the fair to wear the colour red during the day as a sign of support to all the troops that are serving in Iraq. Her business, called R.E.D Fridays, was bustling the entire day. Dadbags organizer Ruth Wimberley said, “Kaitlyn’s gift is very much appreciated and will go a long way toward helping us send our boxes this month.”

T-Shirts were sold for $10.00 a piece along with other items including bracelets that have the same slogan written on them.

Kaitlyn Essman will continue to sell her T-Shirts to those who live in the area until January 12.
