Beckham, Others Sell Sports Shirts in India

Friday 02nd of February 2007 12:43:39 AM

Beckham, Others Sell Sports Shirts in IndiaSports fans in India are buying more and more sports merchandise including jerseys,T-Shirts, and sweat shirts. Sports stars such as David Beckham, Michael Jordan, and Greg Norman endorsing companies including Adidas, Nike, and Reebok are some of the best sellers. American football leagues are also getting into the retail race selling jerseys, hats, shirts, and other sports memorabilia to fans.

The T-Shirts and other merchandise appeal to teenagers in India, according to Sanjay Gangopadhyay, of Nike India, “Teenagers these days are huge fans of sporting merchandise and want to wear their favourite player’ or clubs’ jerseys,” he said.

Other people are also interested in sports merchandise as well. Jackets, sweat shirts, and wrist bands have also gained in popularity.

But foreign sports teams and players aren’t the only ones getting all the attention when it comes to sports merchandise. Indian cricket teams have also joined the ranks of those who are able to sell T-Shirts and sweat shirts. Popular cricket players like Yuvraj Singh have been able to sell many items since they were first introduced.

Nike has also seen a rise in profits from its Michael Jordan merchandise even though he has been retired for years now. “It is not only the name which makes people buy this stuff, it is genuinely higher quality and classy stuff, says Gangodadhyay. Merchandise bearing Michael Jordan’s name and number can be expensive depending on what is being purchased.

Buying sports merchandise with one’s favourite team or player has become more than just a show of appreciation. The clothing must be comfortable and express the personality of the person who is wearing it. This can be accomplished by offering shirts in different colours, styles, and sizes.

With so many sports clubs, there will be no shortage of sports related merchandise any time soon. As long as there are fans, there will be merchandise available.
