Bamboo Styles for Sustainable Resources

Greg Napolitan and his wife, Kate discovered some bed sheets that were made from fabric that consisted of bamboo, while on holiday in Costa Rica and wondered why clothing was not made of this. When back home he decided to create a bamboo clothing brand and launched it as Bamboo Styles in June 2006. He says, “I’m still in the start-up phase," and hopes to break even this year. He sells his garments such as T-Shirts online as well as in his two shops that are located in Ohio and Arizona. He hopes to be able to sell his garments in the stores, but he says that that the fibres are expensive to create, but they do still make a profit. Most of his business comes from word of mouth but the traffic to the website is increasing each month. He is considering turning to advertising soon after he relaunches the web site in the spring.

Last year he sold some of his T-Shirts and other garments at the Burning River Fest, which is an annual environmental festival that is held in Cleveland, Ohio. He is looking for other events to sell his products at. He buys his bamboo fabric from China and contracts the manufacture of the clothing to other companies in the US. All of the clothes can be washed in cold water and spun on a low heat. The bamboo plants can be grown without pesticides and are the world’s fastest growing plants. Because bamboo is a renewable source, Napolitan said, "I wouldn't have done it if it hadn't been environmentally friendly."
