A flea market is held at the Lake Worth High School in Delray Beach and it is held every weekend since it began twenty years ago. There is often over two hundred vendors there each time. The flea market helps the children at the school by paying for school projects and scholarships. The market has paid for between $10,000 and $15,000 each year for scholarships. The scholarships are awarded through the non-profiting organisation Lake Worth Dollars for Scholars, which was created in 1999. This spring the first Betty Milone scholarship, that is in honour of Milone's wife who used to manage the flea market alongside him for over 15 years. She died last February and Milone said that many of the vendors who knew Betty, helped to raise the $20,000 needed to award a scholarship in her honour.
Each vendor’s spot costs ten dollars each week. Some vendors come from as far as Miami and Naples. There is a wide variety of items that are sold here from T-Shirts to fruit and veg. The flea market always features new and used merchandise and includes a produce stand and food vendors. "It's more like a family market," Milone said. Many shoppers come here every week to buy clothing and fresh fruit and vegetables. Some vendors have been selling here since the flea market started and has become ethnically diverse over the years. The T-shirt vendor Jari Syvaniemi sells his shirts for good bargain prices such as three for $10 or four for the same price. Many of the vendors are happy to be helping the children out.
