Sweater Collection Held to Clothe the Homeless

A sweater drive is being held by the Orlando Science Center in order to collect Sweaters for the homeless and to honour Mr Rogers whose trademark was a sweater. The Orlando Science Center is also holding a travelling exhibit that lets children experience Mr Roger's neighbourhood. The seniors who were majoring in English modelled some of the Sweaters and there is already a gigantic pile of Sweaters waiting to be handed out to the homeless. So far the staff, students and faculty members have donated over one hundred of their own Sweaters to the cause and over the time that the sweater drive has taken place there have been over four million Sweaters donated. There are many other sweater drives held all over the country if you want to donate any unwanted Sweaters.

A Rollins College senior, Ashley Coleman said, "We thought this would be a great opportunity through the holiday season to honour Mr. Rogers and do a great event for the community," and he too helped collect Sweaters in Rogers' name for the Cotillion for the Homeless. He also says, "I would have to say my favourite sweater was the green, red and purple stripes and dots." Mr Rogers was a television celebrity for over thirty years for his programme “Mister Rogers’ Neighbourhood”. He felt by wearing a sweater he would make children feel more comfortable and it was his trademark for his programme that was aimed at three to seven year olds. His red sweater is on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
