Students were showing their support yesterday, towards keeping the Natick High School logo after some teachers and former students were voicing their concerns over what they say the logo represents, at a recent School Committee meeting . Racist comments, a civil rights violation and offensive name calling began 46 years ago when the team who were originally called the Red and Blue became referred to as the “Red,” and then the name changed into Redmen, which many people have felt is inappropriate. The students were wearing T-Shirts, Sweatshirts and hats with the signature name of Redmen that is emblazed onto the outfits in colors of red, gray, blue and white. The students were incensed about the idea that their logo is thought of as offensive towards Native Americans or Indians. “We're not targeting Indians” said Katie Costello. The senior and captain of the football team, Nick Haddad said “It shouldn't be switched. It's the biggest nonproblem Natick ever came up with.”
The students have recently lost their Halloween parade and now the school wants to change their logo. The students are feeling angry over the town wanting to be politically correct. To add further insult the students cannot sing Christmas songs, Oscar Otero felt that everything is being changed. The principal of the school Natick High said “I represent all 1,200 students. I'm in the process of meeting with class officers and expect student representatives to speak on the issue. There are strong feelings on each side.” There are pro sports teams such as the Chicago Black Hawks and the Washington Redskins that still have their names and are not considered as being racist. The students feel like their school’s karma will be changed and that the school will not have the same atmosphere anymore.
