A district wide school uniform has been proposed in the Indian River School District in Selbyville.
The new standardized dress code, proposed for schools with grades K-12 is designed to relieve peer pressure, and to improve school image. Both parents and students have mixed feelings about the proposed change, which will include Polo Shirts and slacks.
Frankford Elementary School principal, Duncan Smith thinks if the changes go ahead as proposed, it would be well received. “If the parents knew all they had to do was go to Wal-Mart and buy a few Polo Shirts and khaki pants, I think they’d be happy,” he said.
Donald Hattier, head of Indian River District’s uniform committee says he is looking to provide a ‘level playing field’ for students, adding, “You’re supposed to be going to school to learn, not to see how much of a fashion show you can put on.”
Woodbridge School District introduced a similar Polo Shirts and khakis policy 3 years ago, and students received the new clothing guidelines with mixed emotions.
Michael Lassiter, a high school student in Woodbridge, said, “When I first put on the uniform I felt confident,” and, “My grades have gone up.”
Some students see the other side of the argument, believing their freedom has been stunted.
Bryan Melvin, also a student in Woodbridge said, “It’s putting down our opinions on who we are.”
Another high school student, Eric Massey did point out that the uniform code allows low income students to blend in.
Teachers in Woodbridge have noted an improvement in discipline since they introduced their dress code; khaki or navy slacks, and Polo Shirts or crew neck Sweatshirts, and have seen a decrease in peer pressure.
The brand of clothing and color of Polo Shirt in Indian River is to be decided by the parents and their children.
