Just weeks after Jeremy Paxman contacted the Chief Executive of Marks & Spencer over the inadequate support provided by the underwear he purchased from them, two young men in Loughborough say they’ve solved the problem. Paul O’Leary and Darren Cleary claim they’ve produced a range of ‘radically different’ briefs. Over several years, they have made more than 160 prototypes to perfect what they describe as a ‘revolution’ in underwear design. Because they are still waiting for their patent application to be granted, no details can be given of the revolutionary design, but the key is said to be that the wearer can adjust the level of support provided by the underwear.
O’Leary said the idea came to him more than two decades ago, when he was designing furniture and delivering it. Getting in and out of a van twenty times a day taught him a lot about ‘the problems of keeping yourself in order downstairs.’When he met textile designer Darren Cleary, work on the project began.
Now De Montfort University has invested £50,000 in the project and the briefs are weeks away from being unveiled. Throughout the process, both men have road-tested the performance of each prototype and now they are confident enough to invite Mr Paxman to try out the pants in advance of the public launch. The pants will be available as boxer shorts, briefs, baggy-briefs and hipsters, and could be on sale as soon as May.
